Joint registration (REACH) of pyrolysis oil was completed

09.01.2014

Joint registration (REACH) of pyrolysis oil (fast pyrolysis bio-oil) was completed in December. Green Fuel Nordic Oy is one of the six companies , which together carried out laborious joint registration process. Other consortium participants are Fortum Power and Heat Oy, UPM-Kymmene Corporation, Metso Power Oy, Envergent Technologies and BillerudKorsnäs AB.

The REACH Regulation is EU’s Regulation on the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH).

The major objectives of REACH Regulation are ensuring high level of health and environment protection, strengthtening the competitiveness of the EU’s chemical industry and ensuring free movement of goods within the European Union’s internal markets.

”REACH registration is a prerequisite for substances manufactured in or imported into the EU in industrial-scale. Registration is therefore practically mandatory for all companies or entities that are involved in pyrolysis oil industry,” says project engineer Jerkko Starck from Green Fuel Nordic.

Fullfilling the requirements of the registration process required several stages of work, such as numerous laboratory tests, chemical safety assessment measures, as well as the preparation of the Chemical Safety Report.

”The information gathered by the fast pyrolysis bio-oil consortium, such as laboratory analyses, various studies and other data, can be obtained by external third party later on by purchasing Letter of Access. This way new potential player does not have to do extensive studies and research from the scratch, even though applying registeration needs to be done separately”, says Stack.
