The biorefinery project in Lieksa comprises of building one or two biorefinery units at Kevätniemi industrial area including also new road and rail schemes.

During the event the project and the EIA procedure was presented and questions made by audience were answered by Hannu Luotonen from North Karelian ELY centre (Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment), Markku Vuorenmaa, the CEO of Teollisuuskylä Oy and coordinator of the EIA process, and Kari Hartikainen, the project director from Green Fuel Nordic Oy. The audience was interested in biorefinery’s emissions into air, water and soil, as well as potential increase of traffic. Hartikainen said that the emissions of the planned biorefinery are very low and well controlled. If the project is realized, also traffic arrangements will be renewed. The impact of a biorefinery on employment – totally app. 100 new jobs – was warmly welcomed by the audience.

”The biorefinery would complete perfectly the existing industry production in the area. Proceeding of the EIA process as planned is also in this sense quite gratifying”, says Vuorenmaa.
